Microsoft Edge replaces the Reader app for viewing PDF documents

Gone are the days of downloading third party software to view PDF documents: you can now do it all in Microsoft Edge for Windows 10.

The latest Windows 10 update meant we said bye bye to the built in Reader app that's been included since the start of Windows 8. The Reader app then moved to Windows 8.1 as well.

Reader was built into Windows 8 and allowed a simple and quick way of viewing PDF documents: both these viewed and downloaded from the Internet and those users create when saving a Word document as a PDF, for example.

Because it was so simple to use, that meant it was a basic tool - that's the reason why we're a fan of it. Simple things, right?

If you've got the app installed on your Windows 10 PC, you'll notice that is no longer works, and instead brings up a message about Reader moving to Microsoft Edge.

Don't worry though, you won't have to go back to downloading programs such as Adobe Reader to view PDF docs: Microsoft Edge does it all for you.

When opening the Reader app, you'll be told that it's no longer available on Windows 10 and later versions of the OS. Instead: use Edge! Just like in the Reader app, you can still highlight and add notes to PDFs. You can also have PDF read aloud and ask Cortana to help. The list does not stop there as with the new Windows 10 Creators Update, it can now do so much more.

You might be thinking that because your PDFs now open in Edge, you'll need to be connected to the internet via Wi-Fi or a network cable? Wrong! You don't have to be as it'll work offline too!

If the Reader app is currently your default PDF viewer, you'll see the Edge symbol with the word "PDF", in grey, when in your documents library. Click on the PDF of choice and job done, it will open in Edge.
